Public Information Program
San Diego Unified School District

With facilities in disrepair and student enrollment growing, the San Diego Unified School District launched an effort to pass a $1.51 billion bond.  Katz & Associates worked with the District to develop a cluster by cluster consensus on the most pressing needs.  With the support of principals, parents and the local business community, Katz & Associates launched a region-wide public information program using the media, community presentations, a Web site and other tools to raise awareness of the schools' needs.  Proposition MM passed with nearly 80 percent approval.

Changing Behaviors
Early Voter Program

Katz & Associates worked with the Clark County Election Department to introduce an early voting program using electric voting machines instead of punch card ballots.  Through the “Ready Set Vote!” campaign developed by Katz & Associates, community awareness of the program drew 43,312 early voters for the Primary Election, up from only 11,104 the previous year. The early voting period for the General Election also saw an increase in voter turnout jumping from 46,136 voters to 85,646 voters. Community and organization participation increased outreach efforts with voting posters seen throughout Clark County. Significant television, radio and newspaper coverage helped to emphasize the convenience and success of the program.

Multi-Agency Program
Sacramento and San Joaquin River Basins Comprehensive Study

In January 1997, California experienced the largest and most extensive flood disaster in state history. This event spurred the state and federal governments to undertake the first ever comprehensive flood management program for California’s Central Valley. A comprehensive study of the combined watershed on the Sacramento and San Joaquin river systems, which include a drainage area of more than 40,000 square miles, is the first step. Since the study’s inception, Katz & Associates has worked with a team of 15 state and federal agencies, local municipalities and stakeholders in the study area to develop a communication program that supports the development of a comprehensive plan to reduce flood damage and integrate ecosystem restoration.
